Mary, the mother of Jesus was a woman that was favored by God. Her life continues to be an inspiration of faith in God’s will being manifested on this earth. In this post, I will share inspirational moments of Mary’s life as she mothered Jesus.
Who was Mary the Mother of Jesus?
I believe like Elizabeth the mother of John, that Mary also took on the role of a prophetic mother with godly characteristics .
And like Elizabeth, Mary faced some challenges along the way.
Mary was a true servant of the Lord
Luke 1:38
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
Mary was completely committed to serving the Lord. She did not argue with the angel when he shared with her news about her aunt Elizabeth being 6 months pregnant. She fully accepted Heaven’s agenda for her to become a mother to Jesus Christ. She declared that God’s prophecy would come to pass.
Mary was a young Jewish woman and engaged to be married.
Luke 1:26-27 ( PT)
During the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, the angel Gabriel was sent from God’s presence to an unmarried girl ( virgin) named Mary, living in Nazareth, a village in Galilee.
Mary was a virgin when she met the angel and not yet married. She lived in Nazareth, a village in Galilee. She was a Jewish woman and engaged to a man named Joseph. Joseph had a royal lineage with great kings like King David.
Mary was a prophetic Singer
Luke 1:46
And Mary sang this song: My soul is ecstatic, overflowing with praises to god!
Mary sang prophetically about how over joyed she was to be a mother to Jesus. I could only imagine how much joy was flowing through this young woman. Mary was a humble woman but yet God chose her. He saw her value and said that she was good and highly favored by Him.
She sang about how favored and blessed she was to be His mother. God considered Mary as His godly lover. As his lover she welcomed his mercy kisses on her life. Mary acknowledge that Jesus lifted her from a lowly place despite her lack of royal qualifications. Mary sang to God for Jesus Christ being the faithfulness of keeping the promises of mercy to Abraham and to his descendants.
Mary’s Challenges:
- She was young and unmarried
- She was a lowly servant and her name was unpopular around town
- Her fiance Joseph wanted to file for divorce when he noticed she was pregnant
- She could have been stoned to death for being pregnant without marriage
- She had a difficult and scary pregnancy ( traveled in the night to protect Jesus from being killed)

Mary’s Qualifications
After God’s son was conceived in the womb of Mary, He then gave her the Holy work to nurture and raise Him up in the ways of the Lord. The mystery in all of this is that Mary did not naturally conceive Jesus but yet she was still called to be His mother by God.
So the qualifications of motherhood were divinely appointed rather than naturally given. Therefore, motherhood is not merely about having children naturally, it is about doing the holy work of God for the agenda of God’s ultimate plan.
