Over the years, I realized that when you spend time with God, you are actually pursuing the heart of God. The enemy is always on a hunt to distract us from being in the presence of God so we will not operate in the authority and peace that God has given to us as an inheritance. Thus, Jesus was the model for how to break the power of darkness by showing us how to keep our eyes on the Father and intentionally seeking Him in the secret place.

Spend time with God- What it means for you

Spending time with God can look different for so many different people. However at it’s core, spending time with God is about consecration. Consecration is setting yourself apart for God’s holy use. It is sacred devotion unto the Lord, re-newining your mind and knowing the will of God through testing.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:1-2

Let’s look at the life of Jesus. Jesus devoted his entire life to God by dying to Himself (forsaking this life), serving humanity, and continuously seeking the mind of the Father through prayer and petition. Like Jesus, I believe the Lord does his greatest and most wonderful work when you have decided in your heart that you will give your whole life to God. Make it your life’s effort to dedicate your talents, heart, mind, and soul to God. This heart of surrender truly pleases the heart of the Father.

Jesus was the example of how to spend time with God to discern His will. He knew that he would have to die for mankind for the sins of mankind, yet he still went to the father so that he would not do his own will but he would do the will of God.

5 Ways to Spend time with God

Date God

Spending time with God is like a marriage between a husband and a wife. Take time to learn about God by dating Him! As a single woman, I remember being on the on the couch, watching my favorite Hallmark movies with God. I would ask Him questions about the movie so I would feel less lonely, and He would answer me. I could feel the tangible presence of God’s wind touching my skin to communicate that His presence was near and that He would never leave me. I would ask people all the time, do you feel the wind of God and they would tell me no. I learned pretty early, that experiencing His wind was my secret language with Him.

Set time to be with God

Set some time to to be with the Lord. Some people will wake up very early in the morning. For me it depends on my work hours as they change frequently. In general, I wake up at around 7:00 am in the morning to prayer journal, pray silently, or sing a worship song. You can also set time to be with God right before bed.

Worship the Lord

Worship is a heart posture; it is you acknowledging God’s sovereignty in your life especially when he’s giving you a revelation. So let’s say you’re trying to believe God for provision. The Lord may give you a word that He is your provider. As a response to that revelation, you may give him thanksgiving, thus elevating God’s word above your circumstances or your level of understanding. Your understanding of God’s revelation maybe expressed through song, dance, painting, or even writing.

Soaking

Soaking is about consuming God’s rest in a quiet place of His heart. For example, I would lie down on my tummy or my back as I quietly listened to God’s voice. As I did this, I experienced the most amazing, supernatural encounters from God.

Prayer Breaths

Prayer breaths is inhaling deeply followed by breathing out a prayer ( you can use your own prayer language as you breath out).
