Praying scripture verses over your child brings lasting blessings and rewards for the future. I can remember my own mother praying for me when I was a little child. She would read specific scripture verses that speak on peace, blessings, love, strength, and safety. There were times when she would tell me to read verses with her and often gave short explanations of words that depicted overcoming life struggles. This was followed by singing hymns before finally heading to bed.
As a parent your reasons for praying scriptures over your children may be to protect them, to bless them, and steer them in the right direction. Here are 4 reasons to pray scripture verses over your children.
Praying scriptures verses over your child to teach them how to pray
One of the best things that you can teach your child to do is pray the Lord’s prayer. Teach them to recite the prayer before bed, during dinner time or at anytime that you can incorporate this practice.
Matthew 6:9-13 NRSV
‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’”
Child like faith – Build their faith
One of the greatest things that you can foster in your child is the ability to believe in the impossible. As a child, I believed that I could do so many things. I think this is because as a little child, I became so naive to the outside world. Imagine teaching your child that they can enter the kingdom of God by just believing in a Heavenly Father who loves them.
(Matthew 18:2-4 ESV)
And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
God loves little children and they are a gift to you
God loves little children and sees them as a gift. Your children will one day be able to protect you and provide a way for you. It is mostly true that you can see that your child will one day take care of you into old age. It like the circle of life, you raise up children into the way that they should go like a blue print. Then with that blue print they are able to replicate the care
that you provided to them at a young age to now be reciprocated later in life as a blessing from the Lord.
Psalms 127: 3-5
“Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; they will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate”
Identity in the Lord (Sonship)
Teach your child the importance of knowing who they are in the Lord. Being a child of God means that your child has inherited every heavenly blessing. They are able to conquer every obstacle that comes their way with no fear. Mature children are led by the leading of the Holy Spirit and not by religious systems (e.g., having to do things to be favored or liked by others). Tell your child that they are accepted by you and by their Heavenly Father . They are enough in the Lord’s eyes.
Romans 8:14-17
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
